In a move that will surprise few, Universal Pictures has officially announced a sequel to the biggest film of the year so far, Jurassic World. Stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are back and the film is due out June 22, 2018. Jurassic World writer/director Colin Trevorrow will write the script, but won’t sit in the director’s chair this time (it’s been rumored that he’s being courted to direct one of the new Star Wars films). No new director has been announced, nor an official title. Producers Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg are also back on board.

Considering that Jurassic World has so far grossed $614.3 million domestically and $1.522 billion worldwide and is now the third-highest grossing film of all time behind Avatar and Titanic, it’s a no brainer that the studio wanted to act faster than the 14 years it took to make Jurassic World after 2001’s Jurassic Park III. But the big question is how they pull off a credible story. Jurassic World was certainly fun summer entertainment, but after the events of the first three Jurassic Park movies it was hard enough to believe that they would actually open a dinosaur island theme park. After the events in Jurassic World it seems impossible that they could get away with reopening the park. Some things that could make a Jurassic World creatively exciting could include having Spielberg return as director (he made the first two) or having original Jurassic Park stars Sam Neil, Laura Dern, or Jeff Goldblum come back. Either way, it’ll probably be another monster hit.
