Elbow frontman Guy Garvey formally announced his debut solo album, Courting the Squall, on Wednesday. The first single was announced as “Angela’s Eyes” and was played on BBC Radio 6 Music, but there was no easy way for U.S. listeners to hear the song. Now it has surfaced on YouTube (stream below) and can also be listened to on Spotify here. Furthermore it’s been announced that despite the album coming out in the U.K. on October 30, it won’t be out in America until spring 2016.

“Angela’s Eyes” sounds removed enough from the average Elbow song to justify it being a solo track. Sometimes a frontman will release a solo album that sounds identical to his main band, but that’s not the case here. A press release says that the album is partly inspired by Tom Waits and David Bowie’s Sound and Vision, and that it includes a duet with Jolie Holland.

In these days of a global Internet, social media, multiple streaming services, and a universal worldwide new release day for albums, it seems a bit strange to delay an album’s release date in America, but hopefully it’ll be worth the wait. Stream “Angela’s Eyes” below. Following that are some upcoming solo Garvey tour dates in the U.K.

Elbow’s latest album is 2014’s The Take Off and Landing of Everything and they recently released a new four-song EP entitled Lost Worker Bee. Read our 2014 print article on Elbow and our 2014 web-exclusive interview with frontman Guy Garvey on his favorite cities.
