London art-rock band Modern Woman have shared a new single, “Daniel,” ahead of their debut album Johnny’s Dreamworld, set for release May 1 via One Little Independent.
One of the album’s quieter moments, the track was written by frontwoman Sophie Harris during a camping trip in North Wales and is rooted in childhood memories. Harris says: “I wrote this in North Wales a long time ago. It’s a simple song. I hope it captures some sort of spirit-feeling. I was camping near a lake we used to go to all the time as a kid when I wrote it.”
Recorded live in the room with violinist David Denyer, “Daniel” features a deliberately sparse arrangement that provides a reflective pause within a record full of sharp intensity and shifting dynamics.
Johnny’s Dreamworld marks the culmination of Modern Woman’s evolution from Harris’s early solo project into a fully realized band, with Juan Brint-Gutiérrez on bass and saxophone and Adam Blackhurst on drums. Blending post-punk urgency with avant-garde textures and folk-leaning lyricism, the album explores the strange poetry of everyday life and the tensions between beauty and brutality.
Previously the band shared the album’s first single, “Dashboard Mary,” which was one of our Songs of the Week. The album’s second single, “Neptune Girl,” also landed on Songs of the Week.
Modern Woman will support the release with a run of UK and European live dates.
