New Music’s Global Release Day Set to Begin Friday, July 10
Move Hopes to Combat Piracy
Last month the global recording industry announced that it will universally adopt Friday as the worldwide release day for new albums. Now, according to Music Week, Friday, July 10 is set to kick off this new schedule. One of the main reasons the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry decided on the shift in the first place was to lessen the occurrence piracy. Oftentimes as Australia and Germany already have their release dates on Fridays, leaks would occur across via the internet before the Monday and Tuesday release dates of the UK and U.S. respectively.
“The compelling logic of Friday is that it is the day that best suits consumers … the highest footfall in physical retail stores and the highest levels of purchasing traffic online,” the IFPI wrote in a statement when they first revealed the shift. “It’s also the time of greatest activity on social media, helping amplify the buzz around new releases everywhere. And the weekend is a time for greater spontaneous purchasing.”
