New Pink Floyd Album Announced

The Endless River Out October

David Gilmour’s wife Polly Samson nearly broke Twitter today when she announced a new Pink Floyd album is due out in October. According to the tweet, The Endless River is taken from 1994 Division Bell sessions with Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright, who died in 2008. Division Bell was the band’s last album, and turns twenty this year.

Though there is no word yet on any involvement from Roger Waters, who shared songwriting and vocals duties with guitarist Gilmour during most of Floyd’s run in the ‘70s and ‘80s, it’s comforting to know that Wright has contributed to the new album. Wright was one of Pink Floyd’s original members, along with Waters, drummer Nick Mason, and the band’s original enigmatic frontman Syd Barrett. Gilmour joined the band when Barrett’s mental health began to deteriorate in the late ‘60s, and took over as principle songwriter following Waters’ departure after The Final Cut in 1985. Gimour and Waters’ working relationship has been complicated over the years, to say the least, but their reunion for a charity gig in 2013 makes the prospect of a collaboration a little more hopeful.

To celebrate, here’s a video from their very early days (pre-Gilmour) playing “Astronomy Domine,” but not before being ripped to shreds by a critic on TV who accused them of being “too loud” and “boring.”
