Irish alt-rock trio NewDad have released their new single “Everything I Wanted.” The track serves as the final preview of their upcoming second album Altar, out September 19 via Atlantic Records.
Frontwoman Julie Dawson describes the song as a turning point in shaping the record. “This was the song that kind of set the tone for this album,” she explains. “It’s basically about expectations versus reality. There’s this idea, I think we all fall victim to, that once we achieve something or get something we’ve always wanted, that we’ll finally be happy – but that’s never the case. It’s always, what’s next, I want more. This job can get very hard, very fraught, and I guess I had anticipated doing the thing I love most as my job would be easier and more fulfilling than this. ‘Everything I Wanted’ is me coming to terms with that.”
The single’s artwork was created by Dublin-based embroidery artist Domino Whisker, known for emotionally charged tapestries that explore themes of memory and healing.
The release follows “Roobosh” and “Pretty,” completing a trio of singles that reflect the album’s thematic push and pull between ambition and sacrifice, home and displacement. Written in the wake of the band’s move from Galway to London, Altar is both a love letter to home and a meditation on the cost of leaving it behind. Produced with Shrink (Sam Breathwick) and Justin Parker, the album expands NewDad’s sound into sharper, pop-leaning spaces while retaining their dream-pop textures.
NewDad who comprise of Julie Dawson (vocals/guitar), Sean O’Dowd (guitar), and Fiachra Parslow (drums), first broke through with their 2024 debut Madra, leading to tours across the UK, Europe, Asia, and North America alongside Pixies, The War on Drugs, and Fontaines D.C. Altar promises to be their boldest statement yet, with a UK/EU headline tour scheduled later this year, including their biggest London show to date at the O2 Forum Kentish Town.
