Milla Jovovich
Parcels are an Australian five-piece, although they are based in Berlin and have French connections. Last Friday they released their self-titled debut album, via Kitsuné/Because Music. Now they have shared a video for the album’s “Withorwithout.” Benjamin Howdeshell directed the slasher film-themed video, which stars actress Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Resident Evil) and Danish actor Carsten Nørgaard (The Man in the High Castle) as a married couple whose house is invaded by masked murderers (played by the band), while images of Parcels performing the song on TV appear in the background. Mike Doyle wrote the video, which was executive produced by Jovovich, who is a fan of the band. French illustrator Laurent Melki (Night of the Living Dead, Videodrome, and Creepshow) did a poster for the video. Watch the video below. Above is the poster.
In a press release the band say the video “is our celebration of the American slasher film, a genre which is fascinating in its traditionalism and strict maintenance of its classic tropes with each new rendition. The masks, the kitchen knife, the home invasion and of course the final girl - which in our case got to be Milla, the iconic queen of horror herself. We met Milla at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year when she waltzed in and absolutely tore up the dance floor at a tiny show we were playing, admitting to us afterwards she was a fan. After bonding over a shared love of horror movies, we showed her an idea we already had for a slasher music video and she put us in contact with a talented director friend of hers, Ben. We developed an idea of Milla being this darkly obsessive Parcels fan in a strained marriage and where this could go in a slasher movie. Before we knew it we were in a rented villa in Beverly Hills with bright blue glitter caked thick on our faces working with a real Hollywood film crew until the sun rose. It was truly mind blowing and so much fun, just like any good horror film should be.”
When Parcels was announced the band shared a video for a new song from it, the flute-inflected “Lightenup” (which was one of our Songs of the Week). Their 2017 single “Overnight” was co-written and co-produced by Daft Punk, although the song isn’t on the album. Then album track “Everyroad” was our #1 Song of the Week when the album was released.
The band features Louie Swain (synth), Patrick Hetherington (synth), Noah Hill (bass), Anatole Serret (drums), and Jules Crommelin (guitar), who are all schoolmates from Byron Bay. A press release compares Parcels to The Beach Boys, Chic, and Steely Dan, filtered through modern pop music. The band might appeal to fans of Phoenix, for example.
