Patrick Wolf has announced his first new full-length album in 13 years, Crying the Neck, and released its lead single, “Dies Irae.” Crying the Neck is due out April 25 via his own label APPORT and Virgin Music. Check out the single and album details below.

After a long hiatus from music, in 2023 Wolf released a new EP, The Night Safari.

The British musician was a regular staple of Under the Radar’s coverage in the 2000s and early 2010s, but then he just stopped releasing music. Wolf’s last album was 2012’s double album Sundark and Riverlight, although he returned to touring in 2018. ​​”Addiction, crisis, bankruptcy, recovery, and survival” are mentioned in a press release as some of the challenges Wolf faced during his hiatus.

Crying the Neck features Zola Jesus, Serafina Steer, drummer Seb Rochford, and Wolf’s sister Jo Apps. Wolf wrote and recorded Crying the Neck in the Kent coastal town of Ramsgate that Wolf currently lives in. Wolf wrote, composed, produced, and arranged the album, which was co-produced by Brendan Cox. It is the first of four planned albums.

“Dies Irae” is set in the days before the passing of Wolf’s mother. “I finished the lyrics as an imaginary last conversation with my mother in her art studio and out to the garden as the evening falls,” Wolf says in a press release. “My sister Jo Apps came in the last days of mixing to sing the backing vocals, and in a way, it meant that we could both share a last dance in the kitchen with our ma together.”
