Âellin is the experimental folk project led by UK singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Siân Magill. With Âellin, Magill crafts delicate sonic tangles of acoustic folk instrumentation, glitchy textural passages, and layered orchestral flourishes. Later this week, they are set to share their debut LP, Constellations, which they teased this summer with their new singles, “Shadowstep” and “Monarch.” Today, they’re sharing an early listen to one of the record’s highlights, “Envelopes,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“Envelopes” is at once spacious and intimate, pulling the listener into an enveloping swirl of instrumentation, yet leaving plenty of negative space for Magill’s vocals to sprawl atop. They fill the track with disparate strands of folk guitar, delicate chiming instrumentation, and scattered percussion, all moving gracefully separately before uniting in gorgeous, enveloping harmonies. The results feel misty and mystical, embracing moments of unexpected movement and abstract beauty, like the percussive vocalizations and off-kilter rhythms that dot the track’s latter half. Much like a constellation, Âellin fills the song with elements that may seem scattered initially, but gradually come together to form a dazzling picture.
Magill says of the track, “I wore an envelope necklace for years. Envelope necklaces are an antique tradition now, but they were used to hold postage stamps so that if you ever had an urgent need to send a message - you always had the facility to do so - kept in a locket around your neck. My grandmother loved this necklace, and in the year before her passing, echoed the importance of capturing sentiment and thought, and always writing it down. Of sending sentiment.
In a contemporary context, we have imminent access to messaging all the time - but it is important to remember, very simply, to write it down and send it to the people who matter.”
