Alien Eyelid are a Houston-based alt country outfit, combining rustic shades of country soul with southern rock grooves, plaintive folk, and a mercurial psych rock element. The band debuted with their 2023 album, Bronze Star, and earlier this year, they returned with a new single, “Vinegar Hill.” That track proved to be the first taste of a forthcoming new album of the same name, due out on September 5th via Tall Texan. Today, the band are back with another new single, “Nesadel Club,” premiering with Under the Radar.

“Nesadel Club” begins as a winding and pastoral country amble, but quickly takes on new dimensions. Songwriter Tyler Morris’s dreamy vocal melodies drift unmoored above twangy guitar lines and scattered percussion, with saloon keys and harmonica occasionally dancing in the track’s margins. The slow-burning country confessional gradually shifts as the full band gradually pulls in free-floating psych guitar solos and a swirling sax passage. The results don’t lie squarely in the worlds of country, psych rock, or folk. Instead, Alien Eyelid crafts a soundscape completely of their own, leading the listener down strange and unexpected detours while retaining the lonesome, aching slow dance at the track’s core.

Morris says of the track, “My father was a full-time musician for most of his life. In the mid-seventies he was in a band called The Liberty Brothers, and they had a nightly residency at a club in Pasadena, TX called The Nesadel Club. I wrote the song about how my father gave his life to being a musician, but his only success was during the time his band played at the Nesadel. It’s about how soul-crushing performing songs to an empty room can be after you had the taste of musical success.”
