In 2023, Minnesota-based indie singer/songwriter Annie Schultz released their shadowy, dreamy, and introspective EP, It Bends Until It Breaks, pulling equally from moody goth touchstones and indie singer/songwriter contemporaries. Since then, Schultz moved from Olympia, Washington, back to the Twin Cities before returning earlier this year with a lilting synth-tinged ballad, “MIS.” Today, they are sharing an early listen to another new single, “Search and Destroy,” premiering early with Under the Radar.

If you scroll back far enough on Schultz’s streaming pages, you can find an earlier version of “Search and Destroy” that they shared in 2022. Since then, the track has evolved in a new direction, pivoting from rattling and distorted goth rock towards robotic new wave synths and shimmering pearlescent textures. Although the track retains Schultz’s misty vocal melodies, they now come ensconced in steady drum machine beats, woozy keys, and rippling effects. The effect is both uneasy and magnetic, re-framing Schultz’s songwriting and revealing a penchant for textural and off-kilter art pop.

Schultz says of the track, “‘Search and Destroy’ has gone through many recording iterations since I wrote it a few years ago,” Schultz explains. “I was listening to a lot of Prefab Sprout and Arthur Russell at the time of this recording, and I thought this version would make for a good canvas to lean into my new wave influences and experiment with running keyboards and drum machines through pedals and effects. My old bandmate from Olympia wrote and recorded a bassline for this version while visiting me in the Twin Cities, which felt really in line with my mission for this album to explore connections between different phases of my life.”
