Brighton-based indie rock outfit Canned Pineapple have been on the rise over the past year, building a fuzzy and infectious sound intertwined with various strains of garage rock, psychedelia, and vintage pop songcraft. They debuted last year with a self-titled EP and followed this year with a relentless series of live dates, alongside a handful of new singles, “Bowie,” “She Says,” and “Jessie Met Jane.”
The latter track is also the lead single from the band’s upcoming sophomore EP, Big Break. Today, the band are back with another new track, “My Only Favourite Girl,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“My Only Favourite Girl” plays out like a blast of old-school power pop, opening in a blur of riffs, power chords, and pounding drums. After its opening moments, the band dances between playful guitar pop pastiche and a soaring sing-along chorus, adding a scuzzy and fuzzy twist on well-worn pop song structures. Meanwhile, the lyrics effortlessly capture vintage rock and roll romanticism: “I just want you in my world / My only favourite girl / I’ll see you tonight.” In a bygone era, the track would’ve fit perfectly with propulsive new wave radio fare, seamlessly weaving together lean guitar hooks and infectious layers of distortion. Instead, it is an effortless encapsulation of the band at their most catchy and captivating.
Speaking about the single, the band explain: “When Canned Pineapple were on a 2 week long hedonistic getaway to nowhere specific, they got up to plenty. After meeting allusive spirit guide figure ‘Nora Chatton’ the five pineapples continued their strange journey under her wing, hardly leaving her side. They bounced between a number of cities, parties and pillows before returning home leaving Nora behind. ‘My Only Favourite Girl’ highlights this two week period which was a very important time of growth and expression for the band.”
Listen to the track below, out everywhere on November 27th. The Big Break EP is out next year.
