Premiere: Eric Cannata Shares New Single “Fruit”

Debut Solo Album Holding Onto the Holy Is Out January 24th

Jan 17, 2025

Later this month, Eric Cannata—co-founder of long-running indie rock outfit Young the Giant—is set to share his debut solo album, Holding Onto the Holy, out January 24th. Cannata made his first forays into his solo career in early 2020 with his EP, Lonely Beast. In quarantine he began exploring influences from ‘60s and ‘70s singer/songwriters, gradually fleshing out the instrumentation and dressing his vocals with playful contributions from loved ones and longtime collaborators.

Last year, he began teasing the album with his early singles, “The Wave,” “There You Go Again,” and “Like You Do,” and today he is back with another new track, “Fruit,” premiering with Under the Radar.

“Fruit” is a sugary dose of groovy psych pop, colored by a languid guitar riff and woozy synth tones. On it’s surface the track is inviting and warm, yet there is also an unresolved tension brimming just underneath. Restless rhythms and scratchy guitar soloing burst to the forefront halfway through, bringing out some prickly undertones and mirroring the track’s lyrical themes. Cannata sings about being constantly busy and agitated, so much so that you can’t enjoy life’s pleasures when the excitement fades: “Wake up caffeine, crash out, repeat / I am escaped by the skin of my teeth, quick on my feet / When the chaos is over / There’s a clearing in the clouds / I taste the fruit of my labor / But the fruit’s gone sour so I spit it out.”

Cannata says of the track, “‘Fruit’ is a song about never taking time to rest and celebrate the fruit of my labor. For many years I just roll into the next project head on, without much room to reflect and breathe. This song is a reminder for myself to stop and smell the flowers, and take time to honor the work that I put into each project. This is one of my favorite tracks on the record as it is a bit comedic, and funky. The record is overall fairly mellow, so I’m glad that I captured the frenetic and neurotic side of my personality. When I went to Idyllwild Recorders to record Kosta on drums, he flipped the snare drum upside down so there’s a nice high pitched crack that gives the groove a feeling of excitement. I really love how the rhythm section in the song embellishes certain lyrics throughout.”

He continues, explaining of the accompanying video, “The music video for ‘Fruit’ resembles my neuroticism. The fruit is symbolic of the work I put into music projects, and my frenetic energy, and wasteful-ness toward the fruit is showing my inability to slow down, and celebrate the fruit of my labor. The director Taylor Thompson and his assistant Johnny Biedenharn shot the video with a mix of 16mm film and digital.”
