San-Antonio-based outfit FEA makes punk music that feels pulled straight out of the genre’s ‘70s heyday while remaining biting, melodic, and relevant. Jenn Alva and Phanie Diaz formed the band following the breakup of their previous project, Girl in a Coma, and released their self-titled debut in 2015, co-produced by Alice Bag, Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace, and Babes in Toyland’s Lori Barbero. In the years after, the band followed with their 2019 sophomore record, No Novelties, and their 2023 EP, Take Cover. Later this week, they’re set to share another new album, The Nerve.
The Nerve is fittingly raw and frayed, drawing on themes of abuse, survival, and reclaimation, both personally and societally. As the band describes, “This album is a raw reflection of survival, truth, and growth. It draws from my experience, being in a toxic relationship while also speaking to broader struggles like restricted autonomy, hidden abuse, and lack of transparency from those in power.
The Nerve is about reclaiming my voice, confronting what’s been silenced, and finding the strength to speak up or ask questions.”
Today, ahead of the album’s release, FEA is sharing an early listen to one of its unheard tracks, “Stay In Your Lane,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“Stay In Your Lane” is a no-frills punk effort, drawing its power from a steady, propulsive rhythm section, sharp riffs, chanting gang vocals, and an insistently catchy melody. It is short, punchy, and direct, culminating in a shredding guitar solo. Meanwhile, the lyrics lay out a similarly straightforward declaration of reproductive independence: “Hands off my uterus / Stay in your lane / To regress is to oppress / This is the ugly truth / We won’t let go / ‘Cause they won’t stop until they have it all.”
The band says of the track, “This is another empowerment anthem from us that came directly from frustration with politicians—especially men—trying to make decisions about abortion and women’s bodies. The message is simple: STAY IN YOUR LANE. Lines like ‘we’re going backwards’ and ‘hands off my uterus’ reflect how urgent and real this fight is. At the end of the day, it’s about bodily autonomy, equality, and not allowing control over our lives to be taken away.”
Check out the song below, along with the band’s upcoming tour dates. The Nerve is out everywhere on May 29th.
