Later this week, FIGHTMASTER – the solo musical project of singer/songwriter and actor E.R. Fightmaster – is set to share their debut album, Tolerance, out everywhere on June 5th. Fightmaster first drew attention for their work as an actor, including roles on Grey’s Anatomy and Shrill, but they’ve also put in time as one half of the LA garage rock duo Twin. In 2023, they released their debut solo EP, Violence, followed by their sophomore EP, Bloodshed Baby, the following year, both of which quickly grew a following among fans of queer and confessional indie singer/songwriters.
Tolerance finds Fightmaster a little older and wiser, writing from a more settled place while unearthing a project that is even more lyrical and personal than those early efforts. They unravel diaristic reflections on past hurts and tangled relationships, coupled with songwriting that dances between sleek alt pop, propulsive synth rock, power pop, and layered singer/songwriter fare. “I wanted to break through more personally on this album,” Fightmaster says. “I really wanted to give people a part of myself. So I didn’t walk into Tolerance with a character to portray. I would decide that a song felt good if it hurt a little bit. There had to be this real truth to it. And that requires a lack of wall between self and the audience.”
They announced the album with its sparkling lead single, “All or Nothing,” and followed over the last few months with a punchy follow-up, “Quicksand,” and the moody, densely textured rumble of their latest single, “Glide.” Today, ahead of the album’s full release on Friday, Fightmaster is back with another new track, “Minotaur,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“Minotaur” is a graceful folk pop waltz, soundtracking Fightmaster’s resonant vocal melodies with lilting keys, feathery percussion, and sweeping instrumental crescendos. Their voice sounds lovely in this context, ensconced in warm acoustics and intimate production. Every element comes off as gentle, glassy, and gorgeous, yet the results never veer into feeling overly ornate. Instead, Fightmaster and their collaborators fill the track with small emotive touches like piano dancing through the mix or flowery blooms of strings, letting these moments swell and fade as the acoustic guitars churn away, leaving just a hint of cool melancholy in their wake.
Fightmaster’s lyrics loll into this bittersweet feeling, looking back wistfully on a fading relationship: “Don’t look back at the shore and catch me waving / Freeze me in time and space / Go ahead and drop your white sails, baby / So they know you made it safe / Out of my labyrinth, your minotaur, I didn’t mean to make it hard / You held our ball of twine / Now I’m calling you with nothing, the one you left behind.” Fightmaster notes, “The longer I sat with this myth, the more my heartache shifted from Theseus and his father to the Minotaur himself.”
