Today, rising indie rock outfit flipturn are sharing their sophomore record, Burnout Days. The record arrives after years of honing their sound on the road in the lead-up to their 2022 album Shadowglow, and a banner year that saw the band taking on bigger stages, constant touring, and looming burnout. Subsequently, the band went into the studio looking to explore more atmospheric, introspective, and biting material while retaining the shades of propulsive indie pop that bring their sound to life.
The band have already shared a handful of singles from the record last year, including “Juno,” “Rodeo Clown,” and “Sunlight,” and accompanying the album’s release they are sharing a video for its title track, premiering with Under the Radar.
“Burnout Days” opens with a lithe surf guitar riff but quickly settles into a space full of simmering tension, shading the band’s bright guitar tones with atmospheric swirls of fractured melody and a driving rhythm section. Rather than constantly barrelling forward, the track ebbs and flows, ratcheting up the tension with interlocking guitars and crescendoing melodies only to pull back at the last second. This free-flowing dance hits its climax at the track’s end as vocalist Dillion Basse trades in his gentle croons for a searing graveled cry, finally letting all the tension explode outward as the band storms ahead into the finale.
Basse says of the track, “We decided to name the album and also wrap it up with this song in particular because it was the most hopeful outlook on the side effects of burnout. The inspiration came when I met my current partner. I have always had a hard time letting myself enjoy life because I was constantly wanting more, never truly felt satisfied with where I was and who I was, and honestly sometimes just didn’t think I deserved to enjoy it at times. She slowed everything down and for the first time I wasn’t denying the feeling of burnout but embracing it as just another chapter in my life that I was going to grow from.
In broader terms though dealing with burnout as a band made us realize and appreciate the people in our lives that loved us no matter what. Chasing this dream we’ve always had has led us to leave the people we care about constantly. With no guarantee of actually achieving it they still support us because they love us and they know how much we love what we do.”
