Premiere: Harry the Nightgown Share New Video for “bellboy”
New LP Ugh is Out Now via Leaving Records
Jun 23, 2025
Earlier this month, electronic art pop outfit Harry the Nightgown shared their sophomore record, Ugh, crafting an eclectic series of outre pop concoctions that veer between surreal maximalist balladry, whizzing techno beats, and insistently catchy chord progressions. The band first debuted with their 2020 self-titled LP, followed by a 2022 EP, Airy the Light Cloud. Their latest record also sees the project’s original members, producer Spencer Hartling (who records solo music as tp Dutchkiss) and vocalist Sami Perez (of The She’s and Jerry Paper), joined by Luke Macdonald. Both Perez and Macdonald are also touring members of Cherry Glazerr.
Today, Harry the Nightgown are following the album’s full release with a new video for one of the record’s highlights, the opener “Bell Boy,” premiering with Under the Radar.
With “bell boy,” Harry the Nightgown wastes no time in giving you a sample of the sprawling genre blurs on Ugh, dousing the track in jittery synth textures, noodling basslines, and rapid-fire chopped rhythms. Yet, it also retains a blissed-out energy with Perez’s wordless vocalizations. That lithe and airy sheen carries forward once the track fully kicks into gear as Perez’s melodies flit and flicker above a dizzying swirl of breakbeats and playful chord progressions. Soon after, the track descends into heady IDM rhythms and ambient soundscapes. The band dances between tones with fluid ease, never staying still long enough to fully get a handle on the track’s wild progressions. The results sound akin to the tangled headphone wires that flash across the screen in the video: chaotic and knotted but also charmingly retro.
The band says of the track, “[Director Clara Ribot] originally wanted to make a video all on public transportation because, according to her, ‘listening to music on the bus in Los Angeles is one of the most emotionally impactful experiences someone can have.’ However, after seeing us perform, Clara was charmed by a certain playful energy of ours and wanted to pivot to a performance video to capture that vibe (and also add a hint of fantasy). Most of our past videos have been narrative, but we like that ‘bellboy’ is primarily a performance video—it’s a callback to the classic music videos you watched as a kid and felt like you were in the room with the band. We got [Evan Oppedisano Carson] to come along to the shoot, and he edited the intro segment from his own footage. We love the switch from his lo-fi intro into Clara’s HD vision when the song kicks in.”
