British indie singer/songwriter Henry Grace has spent the waning months of the year teasing his forthcoming second album, Things Are Moving All Around Me, due out early next year. Grace shared his debut album, Alive in America, in 2022, introducing himself with a record of spacious folk and Americana inspired by the likes of Bon Iver. Although this penchant for tremulous confessionals isn’t absent on his follow-up, Things Are Moving All Around Me finds Grace stepping into a frontman role. He’s joined on the record by Brian Love on guitar, Tom Holder from The Heavy Heavy on bass, Toby Evangelou on drums, and co-producer Blaine Harrison of Mystery Jets on keys and backing vocals.
This year, Grace has shared a handful of singles from the record already: “Say Something Mean,” “This Is The Place,” and “Things.” Today, he is back with a fourth and final single, “California Rain,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“California Rain” unspools softly and slowly, letting Grace’s vocals settle into a wistful space dominated by swirling reverb, atmospheric guitar accents, and delicate keys. The effect he conjures feels akin to sprawling heartland rock fare like Wild Pink or The War on Drugs. The overwhelming mood of the track is placid and serene, but the churning rhythms and the vocals’ melancholic tinge imply hints of turmoil burning underneath. It’s a bittersweet contrast that grows more prominent until the instrumentation spills out into a moving guitar solo in the track’s final moments.
Like many of the songs on the record, the lyrics meditate on themes of nostalgia, growth, and transition, with Grace looking back over the changing landscape of his life: “You’ve been on my mind / You’ve been playing all day / No end or beginning / Like the passing parade / I remember us getting high / At the edge of your bed / Watching the missiles fly / Over our heads / And it’s only the start / only the start / The start of the war.”
“This song has always been a firm favourite of everyone involved in the making of this record,” Grace shares. “It offers a sense of yearning, and a restlessness that runs like a thread through all the singles on the album.”
