New Jersey band High. debuted in 2022 with their EP Bomber, joining the growing tide of rising bands on the indie circuit crafting gauzy, noisy, and melodic blends of shoegaze and slowcore. Late last year, the band returned with a pair of new singles, “In A Hole” and “Catcher,” teasing their new sophomore EP, Come Back Down. The full EP is out tomorrow via New York indie mainstay, Kanine Records, and will feature Bomber on the B-Side of the record, marking the first time their debut EP will be available on vinyl.
Today, ahead of the release, the band are sharing a new video for “Dead,” one of the highlights off of Bomber, premiering with Under the Radar.
In addition to featuring on the Bomber EP, “Dead” is also the band’s debut single. Releasing the video ahead of the band’s latest EP acts as a point of contrast, but it also shows how much of the band’s style has been in place from the beginning. The haunting shimmer of their melodies, the bleary smears of distorted guitars, and the triumphant refrain all feel searing and vital. Meanwhile, the accompanying video is a tour through nostalgia, teenage restlessness, and suburban boredom, filtered through placid natural imagery and ‘90-tinged photo negatives.
“I didn’t expect to be so emotionally overwhelmed watching this video. We filmed this over a year ago after we released the song and watching it now makes me realize how much time has passed, how much we’ve accomplished,” explains drummer Jack Miller. “It’s very powerful. This and the new Flowers video we filmed over the weekend really exemplify Come Back Down and Bomber: two EPs released some time apart and the space in between that’s been nothing but magic.”
“The video isn’t so much about rebellion—it’s about escape,” the band explains. “It’s about finding yourself in places you’re not supposed to belong. We captured a raw, almost haunting juxtaposition—nature’s beauty, entangled with the suffocating monotony of suburban life, where youth seek meaning in the most destructive ways. The young boy with the fireworks, the wayward teenagers smoking- it’s as if versions of our younger selves are staring back at us. In the broken hum of the suburbs, we’re reminded that even the most picturesque places can feel desolate when you don’t fit in.”
Check out the song and video below, along with the band’s upcoming tour dates with Palomino Blond. Come Back Down is out on January 24th via Kanine Records.
