Jacob on the Moon is the project of Chicago-based indie artist, singer/songwriter, and producer, Jake Dinneen. Under the moniker, Dinneen first got his start recording charmingly homespun bedroom pop before later expanding his sound into a sun-dappled blend of indie pop, yacht rock, and soul. Dinneen shared his debut album, CAME UP FOR AIR, in 2019, followed by 2021’s APOGEE and last year’s Live! From Earth, recording the latter record live with his full band at Audiotree.
Next month, Jacob on the Moon are set to return with their latest EP, The Gemini Club. As they describe, the 5-track EP centers on a loose concept about a dance club on the Moon. The band have already shared a handful of new singles from the record, “Dancer on the Dark Side,” “Long Flight,” and “Swimming in Your World.” Today, they’re sharing the EP’s title track, “The Gemini Club,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“The Gemini Club” sees Jacob on the Moon dipping into a vibrant neo-disco groove, forgoing their light, sunny sheen for a track that remains firmly rooted on the dancefloor. Bassist and co-producer Devin Wessels drives the track forward with a supremely funky bassline, while his bandmates pile on the hooks. Keys ring out, strings dance, and tightly wound guitar lines dart back and forth as the rhythm section holds it all down, eventually building into a wildly catchy breakdown. Dinneen’s dreamy, sighing vocals retain some of the effortless energy of his other releases, but “The Gemini Club” feels anything but breezy. It is a sweaty, frenetic burst of energy, one that insists you move to its pounding dance beat.
Dinneen says of the track, “This song is about the bass guitar and Devin deserves the credit for laying it down. We channeled our inner-Shalamar for this, and I’ll be surprised if it’s not the song of the summer. Joking aside, this has become one of our best live tracks, and I’m so glad it exists. Big thanks to Dev, and can’t forget those guitar stacks from Dylan in the breakdown.”
