East Coast indie rock duo Joyer is back today with their fourth full-length album, On The Other End of the Line…, out everywhere now. The latest project from brothers Nick and Shane Sullivan comes not long after their 2024 record, Night Songs, but it also follows a year of restless change for the pair. Shane moved from Boston to Brooklyn, while Nick Sullivan moved from Brooklyn to Philadelphia, all while the band spent much of their time on the road with Horse Jumper of Love, Wishy, and villagerrr.
When the pair reconvened at Palisade Studios in Chicago to record their newest album, they began to shift their songwriting towards less conventional arrangements, rhythms, and textures, even as they dialed further in on the pop melodicism and gauzy textures on Night Songs. They paired with Slow Pulp’s Henry Stoehr on production and embraced an exploratory and experimental recording process in the studio, allowing their early demos to evolve in unexpected directions.
Earlier this year, the band shared a handful of new singles, “Cure,” “Spell,” “Glare of the Beer Can,” and “At The Movies,” and today, accompanying the album’s full release, they’re sharing a new video for “Favorite,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“Favorite” brims with both infectious energy and subtly hooky songwriting, weaving a charmingly catchy chorus beneath the fidgety rhythms and flinty guitars. The Sullivan brothers drive the track forward with propulsive momentum, but they also give it a wiry, restless undercurrent, with the guitars dancing around off-kilter drums. The results are slippery and elusive, but undeniably magnetic, especially when the band locks in together for the sprawling hook. They pile on the fuzzy effects as the vocals adopt an added dreamy lull, offering a simple promise with the lyrics: “You’re my favorite.”
Nick says of the track, “Coming off of our last album, Night Songs, our schedule for the year was starting to fill up with different tours and things, but we knew we wanted to carve out some time to record again so we booked studio time before we really had a lot written for this album. It was a different approach for us and ultimately made for a cool experience, but it was definitely an adjustment for me. This song came out of some of my frustrations in songwriting and how short the lifespan of a song can feel in the way music is consumed now, but ultimately how it’s my favorite thing to do despite all that.”
