New York-based musician Keith Carne has spent the last two decades as a sideman, most notably touring and playing drums with indie rock outfit We Are Scientists. However, early next week, he is stepping out in a new direction with his debut solo album, Magenta Light, arriving on April 20th. The record finds Carne establishing himself as a singer/songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, playing most of the instruments on the record and crafting spacious and shimmering indie pop. Dance rhythms, atmospheric production, and vast expanses of droning synth tones all flow into each other, cohering around Carne’s penchant for rich melodies.

“I named the album for a psychedelic vision my wife had - she saw sparkling, magenta light pouring from my face,” Carne explains. “I began recording the ideas in my head the very next day with this vision in mind. It’s inspired in equal parts by Pharoah Sanders’s explosive spiritual jazz and Fred Again’s catchy dance anthems.”

Carne announced the album last month with his lead single, “Look For The Moon,” and followed last month with another new track, “37 Hours.” Today, ahead of the album’s release, he is sharing an early listen to one of it’s highlights, “Totally Liminal,” premiering with Under the Radar.

Like much of the record, “Totally Liminal” evokes a sense of fluidity and transience, dressing up Carne’s vocals with electronic effects and washes of chilly, blissed-out synths. Its melodies are often slight and understated, but they also have an undeniably catchy quality, throwing out shimmering hooks with ease as the keys and drums pulse along. However, the mix grows more and more crowded in the track’s latter half until it finally reaches a frenzied psychedelic high, allowing the coruscating synths to spiral out into oblivion under a skittering live drum groove. The track moves between the tranquil beauty of dream pop and indietronica and the mania of dance music, creating its own dreamy liminal space.

As Carne explains, “Totally Liminal” is a song about streaming — how most of us seem to be streaming from one place to the next, one obsession to the next, one album to the next… and how ephemeral the things in our lives feel anymore. I long for experiences and art that allow me to burrow into them. In the video, I play a raving man with a van — he’s kind of a soapbox preacher (a Theosophical preacher to be more precise). He’s desperately trying to get this same message across, while he also desperately searches for something (you’ve got to watch the video to see what!). It’s a message whose implications range from the intrapersonal all the way to the extraterrestrial.”

The video’s director, Al Markman, says, Keith and I have very similar tastes when it comes to the cinema – trash and ‘high’ art – and this is the result of both that and the energy of a couple best friends getting to make something weird together.
