Lapland is the ethereal folk project of Josh Mease, a Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter. In the video for “Unwise,” a cut from his self-titled debut album, Mease braves an enchanted forest.

“The concept for the video was pretty loose,” says Mease. “Basically me wandering around looking haggard searching for a spirit/ghost that I’ll never find. Beyond that, we basically improvised. My wife Lauren studied dance at Barnard, so she volunteered to be the “spirit” I’m searching for. We asked a friend of Lauren’s named, James Kuhnert, who founded a company called Banjo Creative to shoot the video. He’s a creative director that works w/ motion graphics and video. Filming was actually a bit of an ordeal. Our first plan was to film it at Sandy Hook national park in Jersey, and the day we chose to film was the weekend hurricane Sandy came along and destroyed the park. We regrouped and decided to film in a wooded area of Queens a few months later, and the day we chose to film there was a Nor’easter storm. We filmed anyways and didn’t quite get what we needed. We were going for a ghostly/ethereal look, but everyone ended up looking more like freezing/wet feral cats. After we recovered from our colds/flus from being out in the elements, we went back to the same forest in Queens and finally had a successful shoot.
