New York-based quartet Laveda are set to return tomorrow with their third full-length album, Love Darla, arriving two years after the band’s 2023 sophomore effort, A Place You Grew Up In. Their previous album found them incorporating newfound alt rock influences into their lush, soft-hued blend of dream pop and shoegaze, and their latest release pulls them further down that road. In the intervening years, the band’s co-founders Ali Genevich and Jacob Brooks, moved from Albany to Queens and began adopting a new grimier approach, one laden with roiling basslines, slashing guitar textures, and chaotic waves of feedback.

Ahead of the album’s release, the band have shared a handful of new singles from the record, including “Heaven,” “Cellphone,” and “Strawberry,” and today they’re sharing an early listen to one of the album’s highlights, “Tim Burton’s Tower,” premiering with Under the Radar.

“Tim Burton’s Tower” slightly softens the harder edges found on the record’s previous singles, letting the jagged guitar lines simmer beneath a bleary sprawl of jangling synths and Genevich’s plaintive vocals. The track’s golden twilight hour glow recalls the lighter touch of Laveda’s earlier records, but the band’s grungy sensibilities and penchant for dueling abstract noise textures remain present beneath the surface. Brooks, bassist Dan Carr, and drummer Joe Taurone color the track with painterly scrawls of guitars and steady rhythms, seeping together into a dreamy melange as Genevich’s vocals float lightly above the instrumentation. The results mirror the accompanying music video perfectly, hitting the same notes of hazy warmth and wistful nostalgia.

Genevich says of the track, “Tim is the oldest song on the album. It started as a garage band demo I made on my phone. I pretty much wrote the arrangement in a day. It was the only song that made it onto the album that was started before Jake and I moved to Ridgewood. There’s this old church that you could see from our living room in Troy and it always reminded me of something out of a Tim Burton film. I think I named the demo and planned on changing it at some point but it stuck. There were a lot of older Laveda tropes in the initial demo but we managed to strip it down a bit with the live band. We felt that the song was strong enough at its core where we could really interpret it in any way and still make it sound cool, so we just rehearsed and recorded it in the same style as everything else on the album. I think it serves as a nice breath of fresh air on the record. Mars [Alba, photographer/filmmaker] and I went out to the Rockaways to shoot the video. It’s really just ‘I-wanna-be-a-movie-star.’ Walking around with my headphones, listening to my favorite song. Running around knowing I’m in my own world and nobody can touch me is one of the best feelings in the world.”
