Toronto-based indie rock outfit madfolk released their debut album, Floor Turned Blue, in 2023, introducing themselves with a hooky, amped-up style that drew on pop-punk and emo alongside hints of left-field alt-country and folk influences. Vocalist Finn Scott, bassist Michael O’Meara, and drummer Jackson Seaward got their start playing together as teens in the local Toronto area, and since then, they’ve rounded out their line-up with Charlie Sills on guitar.

After a quiet few years, the band began sharing a handful of new singles at the beginning of the year, “Katherine” and “Older Now,” and later this summer, they’re set to return with a sophomore self-titled album, their first for Toronto indie label, Royal Mountain. Along with the record’s announcement, they’re also sharing its lead single, “Stick Around,” premiering with Under the Radar.

“Stick Around” leans fully into the band’s penchant for candy-coated melodies and towering hooks, throwing back to the unabashedly melodic pop punk of the early 2000s alongside a breezy indie undercurrent. The harmonies, sharp guitar lines, and clean production all layer together for a polished sheen, but madfolk also bring infectious energy and sheer enthusiasm to spare. They add a fresh dose of authenticity to indie punk stylings without ever letting up on the rapid-fire hooks and hyper-saturated melodies.

Lyrically, the track finds Scott navigating a love affair of convenience, singing “Nothing ever pulls at me / Wouldn’t you hate to be so happy / But I don’t think I’ll ever be / ‘Cause I just wanna stick around / I just wanna stick around.”

Scott says of the track, “I wrote this song about the confusion that comes with being in a situationship with someone who might not have your best interests at heart. I wanted to explore the feeling of romantic desperation in your 20s and how it can be easier to ‘Stick Around’ instead of striving for something better.”

Check out the song below. The band’s latest album, madfolk, is out on June 5th via Royal Mountain.
