Nashville-based indie band McKay have been moving through their local DIY scene for a few years now, beginning as a folk duo before later evolving into a full band lineup. Along the way, the band began pulling from textured and melodic indie rock touchstones like The Shins and Alex G, debuting last year with their self-titled full-length album. This year, they’ve been teasing their next forthcoming project with a handful of new singles, “All On My Own” and “Luna.” Today, they’re sharing an accompanying music video for “Luna,” premiering with Under the Radar.
McKay conjures a delicate dance of tones and textures with “Luna,” opening on dreamy acoustic fingerpicking and pristine folk harmonies before spiking the track with knotted bursts of distortion. The band shows off their instrumental chops and well-honed chemistry with these volatile instrumental breaks, but aside from providing a shot of gritty energy, they also mirror the turmoil and uncertainty in the track’s lyrics. The band describes the track as “a reflection on love that was never meant to be.” As the lyrics tour through feelings of lovelorn longing and heartache, they land on a moment of cautious optimism at the song’s end: “Luna should you ever change your mind/You should know I’ll be hard to find.”
McKay says of the accompanying video, “We worked with [director] Josef Lloyd to encapsulate an aesthetic vision we have had since the conception of the band. Trains have always felt like a pertinent image to us due to what we feel like they represent (transit, change) and felt like this particularly applied to Luna since the song takes the listener through a process of emotional growth and maturity. We also felt like the character of Luna was something to be explored and saw this video as a perfect opportunity to depict the character as a device to represent that change, someone who is on their own journey and, literally or metaphorically, moving from place to place. The visuals of the video were inspired by a run-down industrial aesthetic that we have always felt drawn to as a band. Working with Josef and his team we felt like we had finally created something visually that represented us.”
