Premiere: Nona Invie Shares New Single “Last of Our Shadow”

New LP Self-soothing Is Out February 28th via Boiled Records

Dec 10, 2024

Over the years, Minneapolis-based indie singer/songwriter Nona Invie has contributed to projects from Angel Olsen, LOW, indie folk outfit Dark Dark Dark, and electronic trio RONiiA. Most recently, Invie has begun sharing music under her own name, conjuring a lush and layered style of art pop led by meditative keys, dreamy synth accents, and Invie’s pillowy vocal melodies.

Early next year, she is set to share her upcoming debut full-length effort, Self-soothing, out on February 28th. Ahead of the album’s release, Invie has already shared the album’s lead single, “Forget My Name,” and today she’s back with another new track, “Last of Our Shadow,” premiering with Under the Radar.

Like the record’s lead single, “Last of Our Shadow” unfurls in a decadent, patient slow-burn, building atop a bed of delicate acoustic tones and glacial keys. Early on, the track’s silence rings out as loud as the instrumentation as Invie lets the upright bass tones slowly settle into nothingness. Yet, Invie also makes full use of the spacious mix as the track builds, surrounding her melodies with swells of synths and impassioned vocal harmonies by its end. The deep contrasts at play make both extremes hit at full force, rendering the desolation in the lyrics with heartrending detail.

Invie explains of the track, “I have been exploring some new pianos and synths, different vocal arrangements and instrumentation (upright bass). This song is a sonic outlier in a way but I think it showcases this period of experimentation and expression.”

“This song revolves around the ending of a years long relationship,” Invie says. “It was a ‘bad’ breakup, because it wasn’t mutual and because I perhaps didn’t go about it in the most gentle of ways. I felt self-conscious in my small community and spent too many years dampening my presence, not playing music out, hiding my joy and new love for fear of hurting my ex. Some communication finally happened and it was like a cloud lifted and I just felt totally free to be myself and exist in the world. I realized how I had been totally dogged by these feelings of guilt and shame and I needed to move on from the black hole of ruminating I had been living in. I wrote this in a day and never looked back.”
