Later this week, Viennese indie singer/songwriter OSKA is set to share her sophomore album, Refined Believer. Arriving three years after My world, My love, Paris, her 2022 debut, Refined Believer iterates further on OSKA’s winsome, coruscating art pop, once again encircling her wispy vocals in charming indie balladry and warm pop melodies. OSKA has been steadily sharing new singles from the record over the past year, returning most recently with her new tracks, “With Love, Your Clementine” and “Gloria”.

Today, she’s sharing an early listen at the album’s title track, “Refined Believer, premiering with Under the Radar.

“Refined Believer” leans into OSKA’s quiet confessionalism, evoking the misty instrumental tones of artists like Lizzy McAlpine or Flower Face and the plainspoken intimacy of Phoebe Bridgers. However, while the track builds upon a sparse acoustic foundation, OSKA steadily fills the echoing space with glimmering keys and ghostly backing vocals, eventually crescendoing into a poignant and emphatic finale. The production from David Kosten (Bat for Lashes, Marina Diamandis) makes the track feel both serene and impassioned, bringing a warmth to OSKA’s vocals and a weighty thud to the percussion.

Meanwhile, OSKA’s lyrics are an aching declaration of devotion, exploring the ways loving someone can both make and break a person: “You’ve been calling my bluff / Since we were young and easy to love / I’m still that kid in your eyes / Starting the fight, then starting to cry / But all my sadness subsides / When your smile lights up the sky / Out into the ether / I’m a refined believer .”

OSKA says of the track, “‘Refined Believer’ is about loving someone so fiercely that even the hardest moments can’t shake your devotion. It’s about the beauty and ache of emotional extremes - when one person can break you and lift you up in the same breath. It’s one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written.”
