Premiere: Party Nails Shares New Album ‘Pillow Talk’ - Stream It Below

Pillow Talk is Out on January 8th

Jan 07, 2025

Tomorrow, singer/songwriter and producer Elana Carroll is set to debut Pillow Talk, her third full-length album under the moniker Party Nails. Carroll debuted as Party Nails with her 2018 album, Past Lives and Paychecks, and followed with 2020’s You Don’t Have To Go Home But You Can’t Stay Here. Pillow Talk builds on the cathartic sprawl of her first two records, pulling from varying vibrant shades of indie rock, synth pop, and alt rock. She teased the album last year with a handful of new singles, “Same Old Song,” “First Responder,” and “Trigger Warning,” and today she’s back with an early listen to the full album, premiering with Under the Radar.

Pillow Talk moves restlessly between genres and aesthetics, trying on another stylistic turn with each new track. The track opens with the wistful indie rock guitars and a soulful sing-along chorus of the album’s lead single, “Same Old Song,” before quickly diverting into the bleary synth pop of “First Responder” and bratty spoken-word chants of “D.R.A.M.A.” Later, “Trigger Warning” pulls on the excess and glamour of new wave with glimmering ‘80s synth tones and a steady drum machine beat, only for the record to detour into an intimate acoustic cut immediately after with “Dirty Water.”

Elsewhere, Carroll dives into jagged and noisy synth tones with “Movie Scene” and works herself into an anxious ramble on “Do U Know How,” delivering her vocals in rapid-fire questions above a bed of wiry guitar lines. In the track’s final moments, Carroll offers one last swerve with “Puppet,” veering between confessional guitar pop and crashing, distortion-laden breakdowns.

The album’s underlying tone tours through a similarly vast array of emotions, varying between moments that feel brash, playful, and confessional. Carroll says of the record, “I hope Pillow Talk soothes you and emboldens you as it has me. May it be your friend you fall asleep next to mid-sentence, smiling. May it be a lovers’ face so close to yours you’re breathing their air as they snore. May it be the space between awake and dreaming that belongs to your heart and soul, that is your gift to open every morning and every night.”
