Premiere: Pat Kelly Shares New Single “Young Buck Company Man”

Pittsburgh-based indie singer/songwriter Pat Kelly has been writing arch, witty, and memorably melodic folk rock ever since his 2015 debut solo album, Self-Concept. Kelly released his fourth full-length album, Bored Mortician, in 2021, and returned earlier this year with a pair of new singles, “Tastee” and “Another World.” Early next month, he’s set to share his latest album, Hook, offering another collection of sardonic narrators and tangled lyrical threads, traced alongside longtime collaborators including guitarist and bassist Tim Good, keyboardist and backing vocalist Winston Cook-Wilson (of Office Culture), and trumpet player Jess Tambellini.

Today, Kelly is sharing his new single, “Young Buck Company Man,” premiering with Under the Radar.

“Young Buck Company Man” is partly a breezy beach tune and partly a play on the world of rich, hedonistic yuppies. Echoing guitar lines and steady percussion guide the track along with a gentle hand as woozy keys sway in the margins, all as Kelly sings out in his singular baritone croon. The instrumentation feels sunny and carefree, steeped in the kind of ease that comes when your biggest concern is what pricey bar you’ll be frequenting after a day at the office. However, Kelly also carries with him an underlying sense of melancholy, sketching his character with just enough withering detail to show how empty his life is: “We’re out on the road / It’s me and the boys / Playing another round / Making lots of noise / Young buck company man / I’m the young buck company man / Dead-eyed company man.”

Kelly says of the track, “Could have been called All the Young Republican Dudes. My memory is that once I had the idea for the title/chorus, the rest of the song came together quickly. I wrote it soon after the 2024 election, and I guess it’s about hedonistic bros who love to get drunk and play golf (I prefer tennis).”
