German indie singer/songwriter and producer Philine Sonny straddled the line between diaristic bedroom pop and jangly indie rock melodicism with her first two EPs, 2022’s Lose Yourself and last year’s Invader. Next spring, she’s set to share her forthcoming debut album, Virgin Lake, due out on April 3rd via Nettwerk. The record finds her exploring themes of coming-of-age, familial strife, and defiant angst, as with the record’s driving lead single, “Gatekeeper,” and the slow burn of last month’s follow-up, “Rush Hour Traffic.”
Sonny explains of the record, “I wanted to write this album by guiding myself through the process of growing up and overcoming the past… realizing that yes, things get better but that real progress takes time. Some people change, and some don’t, some come back, and some may not — and that’s not the end of the world.”
Today, she’s sharing an early listen to her latest track, “Weak Spot,” premiering with Under the Radar.
In contrast to the album’s previous tracks, “Weak Spot” is quieter and more confessional, traced via feathery vocal tones, downtempo rhythms, and delicate strings. It is a moment of rest and reflection, carefully balanced between the organic sheen of chamber folk and pillowy bedroom pop accents. In one moment, Sonny’s voice is nestled between sighing harmonies and beatific violins. In the next, the instrumentation fades into the background as soft synth pads, ambient production, and negative space take up the mix. Sonny makes these wordless meditative moments feel enveloping and moving, only to soon after return to her unflinchingly candid lyrics: “I’ve mastered all my flaws / Pretend they’re not a weakness / But the root of all my songs / Just ‘cause a melody’s appealing / Doesn’t mean it’s no one’s fault.”
Sonny says of the track, “‘Weak Spot’ was meant to be a very unromantically honest song, similar to ‘Eye for an Eye’, but in a lot less angry and bitter way. It is about some of my selfish and anxiety-driven behaviors that I’m well aware of and about how convenient it can be to hide these flaws behind rhymes, creativity and being the “tortured artist”, knowing it’s wrong. I was trying to get a good look at my personal weak spots and share what I have found, as I believe it’s necessary for positive change, while resisting the tendency to engage in deconstructive inner-dialogue.”
