Premiere: Reptaliens “Ubik” Video
Portland Breeze Pop Duo Set for US Tour
Jan 11, 2018 Reptaliens
Portland, Oregon’s Reptaliens is the husband-and-wife duo of Bambi and Cole Browning and the two released their gently grooving debut album FM-2030 to warm reception this past year. Ahead of its major US tour to begin 2018 (dates blow), Under the Radar has the video premiere for the all-too-brief shooting star of album track “Ubik”.
The whimsically odd video shows the continuation of their inspirations from cult mentality, transhumanism, conspiracy theories and all things sci-fi. The band had this to offer about their far-out creative process reflecting the otherworldly:
“We were shopping for outfits for our actress to wear during the live show and we found a huge box of hazmat suits. We couldn’t’ pass them up so we bought them all. Later the idea formed to film a video for Ubik during the upcoming total solar eclipse. The song is written by Bambi from the perspective of Cole. Bambi is dead and cryo-froze; Cole trying to connect with her via vid-screen. As her life in cryo-freeze is running out, Cole ends his life to be reunited with her one last time. Ubik is inspired by the Philip K Dick book with the same title. It seemed fitting that this video be filmed during such an eerie and unreal solar event so we tried to capture some of the mood through superimposed footage in black and white, and of course some fog..”
Adds the video’s director Costa Gountanis: “The whole concept fits in with what I usually make which is usually just strange bloody sci-fi culty stuff…Also I feel really lucky to have so many friends down to get weird at a moments notice. The eclipse itself turned out to be way cooler than I thought it would be, I really thought most people coming to Oregon to see it were idiots and still kinda do but kind of get it after the whole experience. We also shot the space pod stuff in my weed tent, It’s always fun being resourceful and I think helps with the creative process. This video was super fun to make and the eclipse was a great thing to experience with really good friends even if it ushered in the end of time.”
