Swedish singer/songwriter Sarah Klang has built a career off of grand pop confessionals, crafting a fluid style that has touched on folk, Americana, and more recently, glassy and euphoric synth pop. Last year, Klang signed with Nettwerk and released her latest album, Mercedes, which she described as a collection of meditations written as she was leaving her twenties behind and becoming a mother.
Klang’s forthcoming album, Beautiful Woman, is similarly personal and reflective, but examines Klang’s experiences through a wider lens. “Ultimately, this entire album is a celebration of womanhood and girlhood,” Klang says. “This album doesn’t really have a lot of love songs; it’s not focused on a specific guy. This is an album about the awkwardness of being a child, a teenager, and about understanding your relationship with your body and self in a patriarchal world.”
The album also finds Klang breaking out of her DIY creative process. She joined up with producer Eric D. Johnson and adopted a live recording style for the first time, playing with Josh Adams on drums (Cat Power, Beck, Wild Nothing), Josh Mease on bass (The Weeknd, Fruit Bats), and live room mixing from Jarvis Taveniere (Avalanches, Whitney, King Gizzard).
Ahead of the album’s release, Klang has shared a series of new singles, “Beautiful Woman,” “Last Forever,” and “Other Girls.” Today, she’s back with another new single, “Go To The Sun,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“Go To The Sun” is a fittingly soft and sunlit effort, coloring Klang’s pastoral vocal melodies with breezy grooves, hints of country-tinged pedal steel, and pillowy guitar lines. Klang drifts between a winding folk sprawl and golden-hued folk rock ramble, picking up the tempo with the chorus before letting the track settle gently atop her crooned vocal melodies and easygoing guitar work. Throughout, it retains a gleaming, ebullient shine, capturing a touching moment in time as Klang sings about escaping all the things that are weighing her down.
Klang explains, “I wrote ‘Go To The Sun’ on the plane on the way to record the ‘Beautiful Woman’ album in Los Angeles. I guess it’s all the feelings inside me about wanting to leave, but then also returning, as a new, healed person. It represents going to better places, be it in your mind or physically travelling to those places. it’s about escaping from the day-to-day and finding your way. I think it’s a manifestation of wanting to feel better, actually.”
