Snoozer is a Pennsylvania-based alt rock outfit led by brothers Mike and Tom Kelly. The pair have been playing under the Snoozer name for over a decade, releasing their debut 2014 album, Cottage Cheese, and returning in 2022 with their EP, Lifesaver, and their sophomore album, zzz. Along the way both members have been staying busy. Tom is has been the touring drummer for Alex G since 2016 while Mike has been recording and producing for his solo project Shyin.
This year, the pair are releasing their forthcoming album, Mid-Earth, via Born Losers Records. The album is out on September 13th, and today they’re back with the record’s lead single, “Behave,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“Behave” opens up the album in style, beginning on a spacey groove before the guitars come roaring in. The band conjures a magnetic contrast as the track rolls onward, playing off the distorted riffs and lithe counter melodies. In the latter half of the track, the vocals fade away, letting Mike and Tom move between rippling quiet textures and searing crescendos of guitar. The band’s ability to pull back and draw your attention in these lighter moments pays off when they spiral back into a raucous finale. Meanwhile, the track’s sparse lyrics meditate on feelings of frustration and self-loathing: “Behave myself / I don’t wanna let the neighbors see what I am watching / I hate myself / There’s nothing that you can do to me / To make me feel better / Obey my son / Light it up and say a prayer for them / A prayer for us.”
Mike says of the track, “Tom showed me a demo of ‘Behave’ one day while we were remodeling a kitchen and I immediately fell in love with it. He was initially working on it for a separate project but I pleaded with him to make it a Snoozer song. I remember the whole world of this weird little kid coming to life in my head as we made it; I love that weird little world.”
