Tomorrow, UK-based indie electronic duo TENDER are set to return with their new album Flux, arriving via Nettwerk. The album follows after their 2017 debut, Modern Addiction, and their 2019 sophomore record, Fear of Falling Asleep.

In the five years since their last album, vocalist James Cullen and instrumentalist Dan Cobb have been navigating the upheaval that comes with continuous change. As the band explains, “The record represents a period of huge change in our life where we both moved away from London, started families and had to learn a bit more about what made us ourselves now in these new lives we’d carved out. Where was our place in this world? The resulting record is both their most personal work lyrically and their most loose and open sonically.

The band have already shared a series of singles from the record, including their latest single “cutting grass.” Today, ahead of the album’s release they are sharing an early listen to the record’s title track, “flux,” along with an accompanying video, premiering with Under the Radar.

“flux” acts as a centerpoint for the album, both musically and thematically. It finds the band at their most soulful and resonant, coloring their vocals with gorgeous gospel harmonies and spacious production. Cullen offers an understated and fittingly tender vocal performance while Cobb immerses the track in an effortless, sun-dappled sheen, building from a sparse blend of bass and finger snaps into a blissed-out swirl of organic and electronic tones.

Lyrically, the track is equally moving. As Cullen explains, “The day I found out I was going to be a father was the same day I was leaving New York and my soon to be wife to go home to London. I didn’t know the next time I would see her or how the future looked. This song is about that day, that journey to the airport and the thoughts going through my head.”

He continues, saying “‘‘flux’ is the title track from the album because it encapsulates a moment in time for us, so vividly. We’ve purposely put it towards the middle of the record because we wanted the rest of the songs to wrap around it almost like a centrepiece.”

Check out the song and accompanying video below, alongside the band’s upcoming tour dates. Flux is out everywhere on September 6th via Nettwerk. Stream it here.
