Premiere: Tomos Eames Shares New Single “Black On the Other Side”

Listen to the Track Below

Jul 25, 2024

After years of playing local Cardiff blues bars, Welsh singer/songwriter and actor Tomos Eames debuted in 2022 with his Black Ocean EP, introducing his haunting and pastoral style of alt folk. Since then he has been largely quiet, but he is back today with news of his upcoming EP, EDGES, due out later this year. He has also shared the EP’s lead single, “Black On the Other Side,” premiering early with Under the Radar.

“Black On the Otherside comes from a devastatingly personal place for Eames. As he describes, the track was written in the aftermath of his father’s death from cancer. The track finds him addressing his late father, singing above shadowy guitar chords and spectral keys: “Did you speak to it / Did you ask it to stay? / Did you fight for it? / Before it took you away?...Is it black on the other side? / Is it like they say?” However, as the track winds onward it begins to feel surging and even joyful. In its final moments, the instrumentation ascends into a climactic guitar solo and a passionate final chorus, replacing the desolation in Eames’s vocals with heartfelt triumph.

Eames explains of the track, “‘Black On the Other Side’ was written after my father died. It’s strangely euphoric as I felt his presence went elsewhere after his passing in a kind of brilliant motion. It’s about life and the afterlife which I have a strong feeling we do carry on somewhere after we shed these bodies! It’s also peppered with memories of his sayings and how life really is a wave we just have to ride it.”

Check out the song and video below, out everywhere tomorrow, July 26th.
