Glenn Frey, a singer/songwriter/guitarist and a founding member of 1970s country rock icons Eagles, has died. TMZ reports that the 67-year-old passed due to complications from intestinal issues (he underwent surgery in November to help fix the issue). The band, his family, and management have issued a statement on Frey’s website about his passing:
“Glenn fought a courageous battle for the past several weeks but, sadly, succumbed to complications from Rheumatoid Arthritis, Acute Ulcerative Colitis and Pneumonia. The Frey family would like to thank everyone who joined Glenn to fight this fight and hoped and prayed for his recovery. Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide.”
Eagles formed in 1971, first getting together as members of Linda Rondstadt’s backing band. The original lineup consisted by Frey, drummer/singer Don Henley, guitarist Bernie Leadon, and bassist Randy Meisner. Joe Walsh replaced Leadon in 1975 and Timothy Schmit replaced Meisner in 1977. The band’s most iconic song is likely “Hotel California,” taken from the 1976 album of the same name, and their 1976-released best of compilation Greatest Hits 1971-1975 was the biggest selling album of the 20th century in America, selling 26 million copies up until 2000.
Eagles split up in 1980, but Frey went on to have a successful solo career, most notably with “The Heat Is On” from the Eddie Murphy fish out of water action comedy Beverly Hills Cop (1984) and “You Belong to the City” from the stylish 1980s TV police drama Miami Vice. Eagles reunited in 1994 and continued touring until last year. Below is a selection of Eagles and Frey videos.
