As TMZ reports, Scott Weiland, former frontman of 1990s alternative rockers Stone Temple Pilots, died in his sleep last night on his tour bus. He was found on his bus at 9 PM last night in Bloomington, Minnesota, before he was supposed to perform a show with his current touring band The Wildabouts at Medina Ballroom. No cause of death has been given yet. Weiland has struggled with substance abuse in the past.
Stone Temple Pilots formed in 1989, initially under the name Mighty Joe Young, with Weiland, Eric Kretz, and brothers Dean DeLeo and Robert DeLeo. They released their debut album Core in 1992, which went to #3 on the Billboard album charts. 1994’s sophomore album, Purple, debuted at #1. The band released six studio albums, the most recent being 2010’s Stone Temple Pilots. The band had various hiatuses over the years and were broken up between 2002 and 2008. In 2013 Weiland left the band, to be replaced by Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington, who then left the band this year.
Weiland was also a member of the supergroup Velvet Revolver (featuring former Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum, as well as former Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner) from 2003 to 2008. He also released four solo albums, the most recent being this year’s Blaster (credited to Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts). Weiland was married three times and had two children (Noah and Lucy) with his second wife, Mary Forsberg. Our thoughts are with Weiland’s family, friends, and fans. Below is a selection of Weiland-related videos.
