Brisbane-based rock outfit Radium Dolls have been on the rise over the past few years, debuting with their 2020 EP, Bel-Haven, and their 2023 EP, All Doll’d Up, before breaking through in Australia last year with their full-length debut, Legal Speed. Fittingly, the band haven’t slowed down much this year, returning with a handful of singles over the summer, “Scorching Heat,” “Golden Boy,” and “Unravel,” all of which built on their penchant for energetic performances and hooky guitar work.
Early next year, they’re set to share their sophomore full-length record, Wound Up, and today they’re back with their latest single, “Moving.”
“Moving” is the most reflective of the band’s recent singles, toning down the careening rhythms and nervy energy of “Scorching Heat” and “Unravel.” Instead, “Moving” is relatively understated and even empathetic, zeroing in on the tenderness and mutual hurt behind a break-up. Vocalist Will Perkins sounds wounded and road-worn, drifting atop of a winding chord progression and steady rhythm section until the band kicks into gear on the chorus. Waves of distortion come crashing in as the band howls together, trading in the track’s quiet for a dose of massive rock catharsis.
When you’re going through a breakup, you can numb yourself with distractions or the rote physicality of packing up and moving, but the true weight of loss eventually makes itself known. “Moving” captures this moment as the full crushing weight of heartbreak sets in with the chorus: “She stayed, just a little bit longer / She let me take anything that I wanted / And all the while / Her heart was breaking just like mine was.”
Perkins says of the track, “Having recently moved out of my house with Tom, I was reminded about when I first moved in. My long term ex-partner and I had just split, and it was a difficult and tumultuous time for both of us. Despite this, we remained supportive of each other, and she came to help me with my things when I was struggling emotionally and physically with the workload and new beginnings. We remain great friends to this day, and I am immensely proud and grateful for the way we were able to navigate that highly emotional period of time.”
Guitarist Tom Perkins says of the track, “‘Moving’ was written in one afternoon. I was playing the verse idea when Will brought in a poem he’d already written, which quickly shaped the lyrics. The band ran the track a couple of times; maybe two or three full plays, and the song was essentially finished on the spot. It’s remained unchanged since that day.”
