The New York City-based band Shower Curtain, fronted by Brazilian-American artist Victoria Winter, are set to release their debut album, Words from a Wishing Well, on Friday, October 18, through Angel Tapes/Fire Talk Records. In tandem with this announcement, the band has unveiled their lead single, “wish u well,” accompanied by an official music video. This track offers a glimpse into the intricate and swirling soundscapes that capture the complexities of early adulthood, brought to life by Winter and her bandmates: Cody Hudgins (Crate) on bass, Ethan Williams (Punchlove) on guitar, and Sean Terrell (Fasting) on drums. Co-produced with Williams, “wish u well” serves as a tribute to the band’s early bedroom pop roots while highlighting their evolution via a more expansive sound with layered guitar riffs and existential lyrics.
“‘wish u well’ is about the feeling of having the rug swept from underneath you,” shares bandleader Victoria Winter. “In a lot of ways, I think this song is a lot of what my teenage self wished the project could create. That vision has long changed, and I am definitely aware of this song not having the more shoegaze and heavier grunge elements that represent the project’s new phase and is more similar to the old phase of Shower Curtain. Yet, I still think its production is unmatched and next level between Ethan and I.”
The music video for “wish u well” directed by Trevor Scholl (Been Stellar) and featuring Brenna Gonzalez (Lola Star) Gonzalez carrying emotional baggage to the brink of exhaustion. Reflecting on the video’s creation, Trevor explains, “It’s an ode to the mentally healing aspect of going for a walk and how stepping out invites the unexplainable. I wanted to capture the sense of exploration found in fantasy films while capturing places we frequent and not relying on overtly ‘magical’ props. ‘wish u well’ is a wistful and bittersweet song. I ultimately wanted to extend these emotions with a daydream in a video.”
Shower Curtain’s forthcoming debut album follows their 2021 EP Something Instead and several 2023 singles, including “meus passos,” a collaboration with Brazilian group terraplana, and “edgar,” the closing track of Words from a Wishing Well.
Last year’s singles marked a pivotal point in the band’s artistic journey, highlighting their transformation from bedroom pop to sludgy rock after a two-year break. Originally a solo project by Victoria, the band has now firmly established itself in Brooklyn’s burgeoning slowcore and shoegaze scene, with the addition of members Cody Hudgins, Ethan Williams, and Sean Terrell.
