Sleigh Bells (Alexis Krauss and Derek E. Miller) have shared a new cover of Lead Belly’s “Where Did You Sleep Last Night.” It first debuted in part in September in the trailer for The Rhythm Section and was commissioned for that trailer by the film’s director Reed Morano (an Emmy winner for her work on The Handmaid’s Tale). Now the band has released the full version of the track. Listen below, followed by the trailer for The Rhythm Section.

The Rhythm Section is due out January 31, 2020 via Paramount and stars Black Lively as a woman out to uncover the truth (and eventually out for revenge) after a plane crash kills her family. The film also stars Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown and is produced by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who are most known for producing the James Bond films. Lead Belly didn’t actually write “Where Did You Sleep Last Night,” he adapted it from the American folk standard “In the Pines,” first recording his version in 1941. Nirvana then covered it for 1993’s MTV Unplugged in New York live album.

In a press release the band had this to say about the cover: “We first met Reed Morano in 2013 when she acted as cinematographer for our ‘Bitter Rivals’ video. Not only was she a stellar DP but she was exceptionally kind, funny, creative, smart. and humble. She left a real impression on us and her tremendous success is no surprise. We’ve kept in touch with Reed over the years as her body of work has grown, and were honored this summer when she asked us to cover Lead Belly’s ‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night’ for the trailer for her upcoming film The Rhythm Section. The Nirvana and Lead Belly versions of the song are total classics, but with some apprehension we decided to give it a shot. Reed and her team made an incredible trailer, and we’re happy to share the full version of our cover today.”

Sleigh Bells released their fourth album, Jessica Rabbit, in 2016 via Torn Clean/Sinderlyn. That was followed in 2017 by the mini-album Kid Kruschev.
