Sophie Thatcher has released the title track from her sumptuous debut EP, Pivot & Scrape, set for release on October 11 via Bathsheba. The song features religious overtones—“God saved the world/ All my troubles lessened,” Thatcher sings before leading into a simmering chorus. “I’ll kill them all, you’ll be/ Laughing when I break,” she adds, describing it as a vocal “fuck you to someone, at least that’s how I see it.”

While many recognize Thatcher from her acting roles (notably “Yellowjackets”) or as the lead in Pavement’s “Harness Your Hopes” video, she’s also a seasoned singer and performer. She grew up immersed in music, art, and acting, and her eclectic influences are reflected in her work. Thatcher’s passion for music extends beyond performance—she’s curated numerous playlists on platforms like Spotify and YouTube, showcasing her deep love for music.

The lyrics on Pivot & Scrape are abstract, drawn from instinctual, improvisational moments. Much like preparing for a role, Thatcher enters a meditative state when songwriting. “I’m not really thinking about anything, and then words just kind of come out to the melody,” she explains. The EP, which showcases Thatcher’s mesmerizing vocals, was recorded at Drop of Sun studios by Adam McDaniel, known for his work with Angel Olsen, Avey Tare, and Wednesday.

Discussing the track, Thatcher adds: “For Pivot & Scrape,” I started with a melodic and buoyant synth line for the demo. The imagery and lyrics were inspired by recurring dreams I had about throwing myself into glass. It felt guttural, a strong contrast to the dreamy sound. There’s also a relentlessness in the lyrics; the ‘scrape’ represents picking up the pieces and moving forward.”
