1996’s Coming Up was a turning point for Britpop originators and survivors Suede. Founding guitarist Bernard Butler left the band as they were finishing up their previous album, their second, 1994’s masterpiece Dog Man Star. Butler was a big architect of their sound, could they continue on without him, especially when his replacement was a 17-year-old unknown named Richard Oakes? With Coming Up they answered with a resounding “Yes!” The band’s sound certainly morphed into something slightly more pop-friendly with Coming Up and consequently the album debuted at #1 on the U.K. album charts and had five Top 10 U.K. singles. Coming Up was already reissued in 2011, when all of their original five albums were reissued, but in honor of the album’s 20th anniversary they are reissuing it again on September 30 via Edsel/Demon Music Group with additional bonus tracks.

The five-disc box set includes four CDs and one DVD: the original album, all of its B-sides (many of which were fantastic), a disc of previously unreleased demos and mixes, a concert in Amsterdam from 1996, and a DVD with nine TV performances and an hour-long film of the band and producer Ed Buller discussing the album. Suede reformed in 2010 and released their latest album, Night Thoughts, back in January. The band made a fantastic comeback in 2013 with the release of the excellent Bloodsports, which was their first new album in over a decade and was very well-received by critics.
