The trio Tchotchke has announced their new album Playin’ Dumb, that they are set to self-release September 15. They have also shared a video for the album’s second single, “Poor Girl.” The Lemon Twigs produced the album. Check out the video and album details below.

Tchotchke is Anastasia Sanchez (vocals, drums), Eva Chambers (bass, keys, vocals), and Emily Tooraen (guitar, vocals). Sanchez and Chambers met in high school in Los Angeles in 2014 and met Tooraen several years later. After moving to the East Coast, the trio released their debut self-titled LP in 2022.

Tchotchke recorded Playin’ Dumb in between Lemon Twigs tours in a Brooklyn studio dubbed “The Vegetable Attic” which sits above a produce warehouse. “Poor Girl” follows the album’s first single “Did You Hear?” released in May. The single also comes with a video directed by Kaila Chambers and Hilla Eden.

Tooraen spoke on “Poor Girl” in a press release. “We confined ourselves to creating the personas of three ungrateful and out-of-touch girls with complete stories in the span of four lines each. The challenge was emphasizing the fact that these girls were not ‘poor’ in the slightest but, in fact, very privileged to have the self-imposed problems they’re so tortured over. The song embraces the girls’ short sob stories while also capturing a sunshiney, Beach Boys quality. It wasn’t until after the completion of the song, to our collective shock, that we realized our counterparts had effortlessly cast themselves. All along, we were creating the villain versions of each other.”

An original board game designed by Chambers which appears on the cover of Playin’ Dumb will accompany the album’s vinyl release. The press release describes it as “a colorful tabletop trip of girlspeak, gossip and truth or dare prompts that reflect the themes of the album, as well as the band’s personalities and style.”
