The Fiery Furnaces Announce 10 Albums
Chances Are None of Them Involve Harry Partch
Nov 12, 2010 The Fiery Furnaces
Today The Fiery Furnaces announced, not one, not two, but ten new albums in the works for 2011. What won’t those Friedberger kids do in the name of art? (No really, what won’t they do?) Only one of those releases is a proper Fiery Furnaces album. Reports Consequence of Sound, the pair will pair digesting Thanksgiving dinner with recording a “loud, aggressive rock record.”
Then there is the matter of those other nine records, which will be solo affairs—without only one belonging to the female half of the band. “I wouldn’t want to characterize her ambitions for that record and get it wrong,” Matthew Friedberger tells Entertainment Weekly. “But I think Eleanor wants to have a new story, as they say.”
Which leaves us with 8 remaining albums—all which Matthew Friedberger plans on recording himself. Like all great Fiery Furnaces projects, there’s a theme. Titled Solos, each album will include only voice and one instrument. Says Matthew, “Playing rock — except for driving around and carrying equipment in and out of a van and getting bedbugs from the motel and that kind of thing — you don’t have to work very hard, so it seems,” says the sardonic musician. “So I thought it would be fun to have way too many things to do.”
Currently only one album is completed, piano-based Solos LP, Napoleonette. Expect the results to start rolling in January-November of next year.
