The Flaming Lips Create iPhone Song

4 iPhones 2 People

The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne really loves his iPhone. After directing an Ariel Pink video on the do-anything device, the musician has taken the next logical step and started creating music on it. Similar the Lip’s 1997 project Zaireeka where music was spread out over 4 CDs, this time the music takes 4 iPhones and an extra buddy to operate. Check out the video demonstration below.

The Flaming Lips have continued work on their multiple iPhones song.
Since the video above from January 12 – the eve of Wayne Coyne’s 50th birthday, Steven posted two more videos of himself working on the “iPhone song” on yet a different YouTube channel (not clearly labeled as his) on Sat., January 15. Steven calls the song in progress “Two Blobs Fucking,” the same name as one of Wayne’s recent artworks.
On January 16, the Flaming Lips tweeted an open invitation to iOS and Android programmers to help them develop a Flaming Lips app, possibly an app to play the iPhone song they are working on.
Then, late that night they tweeted a yFrog video of themselves working on a bass line for the song.
The next day they posted a video of Wayne getting a “wah” effect by blowing on his iPhone.  This video again called the song in the works “Two Blobs Fucking” and described it as “a Flaming Lips experiment where individual tracks are played on separate phones or other sound sources.”  It seems possible that the iPhone idea is somehow going to be worked into FLOBs (aka Flaming Lips Objects - a new series of Flaming Lips art Wayne is creating) and that said “other sound sources” are FLOBs.
Wayne has also tweeted videos of other songs – “To Understand You and Then Destroy You”, possibly a collaboration with Neon Indian, “Their Bad Powers” and “10,000 Onenesses” - none of which seem part of the iPhone project.  This suggests that “Two Blobs Fucking” will be (or at least is as of now) the sole “Zaireeka Mobile Phone” song.
There’s a lot of mystery surrounding all of this.  I have the videos, pictures of the FLOBs art (including “Two Blobs Fucking”), and tons more details on everything I just touched upon at http://psychexfutureheart.wordpress.com/waynecoyne50/iphonevideo/

Examples of native iPad apps that won’t work on the iPhone are magazine and newspaper apps. On the iPad, a magazine spread looks great and is very readable. But imagine the same on an iPhone screen. iPhone Release
