Merge Records is celebrating their China (20th) anniversary with style. First there was their festival and we ran a feature on the label’s history in our Spring issue. Now the Durham, North Carolina independent record company is releaseing a huge, 350-page CD-sized volume.
They’re dubbing it The Merge Records Companion: A Visual Discography of the First Twenty Years and it contains photographs of every 7”, album, EP, and DVD (plus two cassettes) released by Merge in their first twenty years. For design lovers, the 300+ photos found inside chronicle Merge’s visual evolution. Album artwork go from being cheap cut-and-paste jobs to cover of the year contenders. You’re going to need a huge stocking for this Christmas gift.
This limited-edition paperback also features essays by Merge founders, Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance, recalling the times when they stuffed every sleeve themselves.
All proceeds will benefit the charities chosen by the fourteen SCORE! curators.
