An unsuspecting cinema patron might be fooled into at first thinking this is a trailer for another straight-ahead and stuffy period drama adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice if they were watching it in the theater and not via a news item that gives up the ghost (well, zombie). That’s how the first trailer for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies starts, with Lily James (Cinderella) narrating as Elizabeth Bennet. But then soon enough the flesh eaters show up and it becomes clear this is an adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s hit mash-up novel. The film is due out February 5 via Lionsgate and below is the first trailer, a U.K. one.

Matt Smith (aka the beloved Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who) also stars as Mr. Collins, but is only seen briefly in the trailer. Sam Riley, who played Joy Division’s Ian Curtis in Control, plays Mr. Darcy. Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) plays Mr. Wickham and the cast also includes Game of Thrones alumni Lena Headey and Charles Dance. The project has been in the works for years, with David O’Russell originally signed up to write and direct with Natalie Portman to star as Elizabeth. O’Russell and Portman eventually left, although O’Russell still gets a co-writer credit and Portman stayed on as a producer. Burr Steers (Igby Goes Down, 17 Again, Charlie St. Cloud) ended up co-writing the script and directing.

The trailer is brief, so it’s too soon to tell if this will be a ton of fun or a post-modern bore.
