Footage has surfaced of Mount Vernon, the high school band of Bon Iver‘s main creative force Justin Vernon, playing a 1998 high school battle of bands in Eau Clair, Wisconsin. Mount Vernon also featured Brad Cook, Phil Cook, and Joe Westerlund, all who would later form Megafaun (but first played with Vernon in DeYarmond Edison). The nine-piece Mount Vernon also included a horn section and the same year released their debut album, We Can Look Up. The below video shows the band’s full battle of the band’s performance (they were the last band of the night), complete with flute solo, as posted by Andy Schumann to his YouTube page and shared by Pitchfork. The band wins the competition (and $300!).
