Watch Sarah McLachlan Perform as Jimmy Kimmel’s First Musical Guest Since His Reinstatement

As the whole world seemingly knows by now, last week ABC (which is owned by Disney) suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely because of comments Kimmel made in his monologue about the murder of right wing activist Charlie Kirk that inflamed conservatives and the Trump administration, even though they were pretty tame. After much outcry from the left (and even some on the right in favor of free speech) the show returned to the airwaves last night and the musical guest was Sarah McLachlan, who had recently stood in solidarity with Kimmel and refused to perform at a launch event for the new Hulu/Disney+ documentary Lilith Fair: Building A Mystery - The Untold Story. On the show, McLachlan performed “Better Broken,” the title track to her first album of original material in 11 years, which was released last week. Watch the performance below, as well as Kimmel’s monologue.
Also below is Kimmel’s interview with Glen Powell from last night and Margo Price’s performance of “Don’t Let the Bastards Get You Down,” from Kimmel’s last show before being taken off the air.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! is still off the air in about 20% of America because two companies that own a lot of stations, Nexstar and Sinclair, are still refusing to air it. In fact it’s not airing in our area, but we could watch on Hulu and most (if not all) of the episode is on YouTube, split into the three videos below.
McLachlan has been on the scene since releasing her debut Touch in 1989 and officially took off into stardom with her 1997 album Surfacing, featuring the hit “Angel.” Since then, she has released five more full-lengths, leaving off with 2014’s Shine On (her last album of original material) and the 2016 Christmas album Wonderland (which were all covers).
McLachlan spoke about Better Broken in a previous press release. “A lot of the lyrics on this record came from thinking about the world right now and asking, ‘How do we move through this landscape? How do we keep our heads above water when it feels like so much is falling apart?’ I don’t know if I have any answers, but channeling all that angst and uncertainty into the music has been so cathartic. I hope that this record provides people with some relief and release—but in the end I just want them to take whatever they need from it, and make the songs part of their own story.”
